"Love makes the world go round," the saying goes. And many people throughout history have made a living out of loving.
The Egyptian Queen Cleopatra, for instance, allegedly took a hundred men a night to satisfy her lust. She erected a small temple for these sex slaves which he kept for power as well as pleasure.
The Roman Empress Theodora opened her "gates of Venus" to 10 men each night and took on their 30 servants the following morning.
During his reign, King Solomon supposedly enjoyed 700 wives and from 60 to 300 mistresses, while tireless lover Giovanni Giacomo Casanova seduced thousands of women - 116 of whom are named in his memoirs.
"Casanova's specialty was seducing his friends' wives and daughters - often two at a time. He frequently bathed with his companions in a bathtub built for two; and sometimes shared with them the 50 oysters he customarily ate for breakfast. Women, he once said, were his cuisine," wrote David Wallachinsky, Irving Wallace and Amy Wallace in The Book of Lists.
And who could forget King Lapetanaka II, the strong ruler of Tongo whom Captain Cook met during his third voyage in 1777? The 80-year-old monarch claimed it was his duty to deflower every native virgin - a task which he performed eight to 10 times everyday.
China also had its own tireless lover in the person of General Chang Chung-Ch'ang described as the "general with three long legs." The warlord reportedly frequented brothels during his life and Shanghai prostitutes said his manhood equaled the cannons that roared at war.
American actress Clara Bow is said to have entertained the entire 1927 "Thundering Herd" University of Southern California football team.
But history has also been cruel to some people who have no interest whatsoever in sex. What is the reason behind loss of sexual desire in men and women? More importantly, what can be done about it?
Low sexual desire may be brought about by a number of factors. The most common reason is stress as a result of the death of a spouse, physical illness, recent surgery or divorce.
Stress can also come in the form of an inconsiderate or clumsy partner. A man or a woman who is always at odds with his or her lover is unlikely to enjoy sex under any condition at all. So will those whose partners are ignorant about sex and don't know how to bring about orgasm.
"The second most common cause of desire problems is inadequate stimulation by the partner. A man who focuses on satisfying himself can rarely satisfy a woman. A well-intentioned, considerate partner may satisfy a woman and himself simultaneously," according to Dr. David E. Larson, editor-in-chief of the Mayo Clinic Family Health Book.
