History of Numerology

How long have you got?

Where to start?

Firstly I don't believe that Numerology was actually known as Numerology until the late 19th/20th Century so the history of Numerology becomes a history of so much more!

Indeed, the use of numbers is one of the oldest metaphysical forms of communication that still exists and is relevant in today's sophisticated world.

When early civilizations needed to identify themselves, and in effect 'wanted to be counted' they choose a symbol to represent this.

This was the beginning of the number 1.

A symbol to represent man. Notice his head and feet.

Then as time went by and civilizations grew, there was a need for differentiation, hence the numbers 2 & 3.

2, a symbol to represent more than one. Notice the bigger feet of two and larger rounded head denoting two beings.

And so on.

Then as civilizations grew even more; ownership, particularly of land came into question. But how much land? The answer was to measure it and so Geometry was born. 'Geo' meaning earth or land and 'metry' meaning measurement.

The number 4 which can also be written as was then born to split land into divisions of ownership. And so on.

Over 10,000 years ago there was a group of people called the Chaldeans who, not surprisingly came from a place called Chaldea (also known as Sumeria) in Mesopotamia.

No-one can yet conclusively prove how the human race came into being. Therefore we have to rely on religious and metaphysical theories and explanations.

One explanation being that Chaldea was where the beginnings of Western civilization happened.

It is also widely believed that the Chaldeans origins were not human but from the Divine. (Not too difficult to believe as Christianity also claims that Adam and Eve were not of human origin either)

The mission of these people was to spread hidden or Divine knowledge to mankind.

They were obviously a very Spiritual people who saw no discrimination between Spirituality, Astrology or Numerology. Every part of their life revolved around their Spiritual beliefs.

Hence, using numbers in a spiritual way will have been an everyday occurrence to them.

They understood that the Universe & everything in it, in its purest form is energy. Therefore they understood that numbers were part of the energy of creation & that they too had their own vibrations.

These numbers therefore had meaning and could be understood.

They gave meaning to numbers via the use of sound (more vibration). In their system they only used the numbers 1-8 as they felt that the number 9 was far too sacred for mankind.

From these beginnings & as history unfolds we understand that Pythagoras took up these findings and explored & experimented further.

He proposed that all reality is mathematical and that therefore everything can be converted to a mathematical formula in order to give anything a meaning.

Hence; why, as Numerologists we convert names into a numerical form.

He also investigated the vibrational & hence numerical significance of sound which in turn led to him studying music. Through his investigations he started to 'measure' music & this is how the musical scales came into being.

Very little is actually known about Pythagoras's teaching as he taught everything verbally.

He did not allow anything to be written done as he felt that the information was too powerful & sacred to be written down in case it got into the wrong hands.

That said, later on his mathematical theories were taught as beliefs as part of High School geometry and still are today. But I bet you that your Maths teacher had also lost the sacred significance, I know mine had!

It was all down to one of Pythagoras's Pythagorean students who, at a later date wrote down all that he'd learned under Pythagoras's tuition. So it is he that we have to thank for continuing access to the science, psychology & philosophy of numbers.

Plato was very interested in Pythagoras's work and he felt that what he learned from Pythagoras was underpinned by the word of the Jewish Kabala. Adding more and more credence to the subject of what was to later become known as Numerology.

The early Christians also used Numbers & during the Renaissance there is also evidence that the spirituality of number was accepted & used widely.

Concentrating on times nearer to our own, it was a woman called Dr Julia Seton who first coined the phrase Numerology. She was born in 1862 & died in 1950 and during her life lectured her way around the world twice explaining the physics and Ancient wisdom behind numbers & Numerology.

And so we come to the present day when more and more people are discovering Numerology and how it can inspire them to develop their full potential.

With the understanding of who we are and who we have the potential to become we can all become more content, tolerant and happy people which in turn will make for a happier and peaceful

The Mysteries Of Numbers

Numerology is the practice of exploring human psychology, natural trends and events in life using the system of divining numbers.

Numbers are more than the symbols we have all taken for granted. I won't go into the history of numerology; instead, I want to do something completely different. I want to talk about the symbols we call numbers. Mathematicians use numbers to represent concepts. Scientists and engineers as well as musicians and magicians all use numbers. The problem is no one really pays attention to the fact that numbers do not really exist. They represent equations, sounds, distance, timing and relational constants.

For numerologists, numbers represent all of the above and more; much more. We will only cover the divining of the meanings of the month, day, and year combination of your birth.

Why do numbers still intrigue us after 6,000 years?

I started studying numerology in 1981 when I heard a reading done on the radio. I though it was fascinating. I immediately began to read about the history and mythology surrounding the practice. I also began to look at it in relation to other studies; music, math, physics and statistics. There was something profoundly similar though illogical about the whole idea of the universe vibrating to different rhythms.

Pythagoras is said to be the father of modern numerology. He was a 6th century philosopher, premier Greek mathematician and the father of Modern Numerology. The systems of numerology goes back to unrecorded history. We aren't sure of its origins. Today we know that Pythagoras' Modern Numerology is still practiced today. Pythagoras has been dead since 500 B.C.; how is that modern you ask? Because numerology was ancient even then. The system of numerology he practiced used the numbers 1 to 9 and included the higher numbers 11 and 22.

Why has numerology lasted this long? I've found it to be dead on target at least 80% of the times. The rest of the time, I chock it up to my inexperience. I've only been doing this for a little over 20 years. I have literally thousands of charts.

We translate sounds into coherent thoughts and ideas we translate math into vibrations and vibrations into beautiful music. Therefore, I began to look more closely at numbers and numerology. I looked at its similarities, its consistencies and inconsistencies and concluded that there was something to it. The power of numerology for me is in the trend lines that it lays out.

How you can determine the numerical values of the letters in your name. We'll use the Pythagorean system of numerology. Pythagoras was said to be the father of geometry.

He was a 6th century philosopher, premier Greek mathematician and the father of Modern Numerology. The systems of numerology goes back to unrecorded history. We aren't sure of its origins. Today we know that Pythagoras' Modern Numerology is still practiced today. The system of numerology he practiced used the numbers 1 to 9 and included the higher numbers 11 and 22.

The single digits are from 1 through 9 and the master numbers are 11 and 22.

All numbers that are the sum total are reduced to a single digit, (such as: 3+3+4=10=1+0=1). Except for the master numbers which should not be reduced to a single digit as they are used for your reading on a higher level of personal potential than the lesser ones.

The system itself is very simple to apply but can also lead to very complex charts and in depth readings. Let's focus on the month, day and year of birth and learn about the Life Path and Day of Birth.

We follow a standard method of addition in numerology which we call the Fadic system. It means you keep adding two or more numbers until arrive at a single digit. For example, 1967 is reduced to (1+9+6+7) = 23 (2+3)=5

Go and get a pencil and paper. Start by writing out your birthday, (month, day, and year). Now begin to add the first two sets (month and day). Add the year numbers one at a time. Now add that result to the result of year. You now have the final result. If that number is a single digit you now have your life path. We'll first focus on the day of birth; combination of the numbers, known as the Life Path. Let's create an example: 1-14-1967, January 15th, 1967.

First the month 1, then the day, 1+4=5 then the year 1+9+6+7) = 23 (2+3)=5. That gives you 1, 5, and 5. The Day of Birth number is 5 ( the sum of 1+4), the Life Path is sum of 1+5+5. That reduces to 11 or 2. There are two numbers in Modern Numerology that are the exceptions, 11 and 22 are the higher vibrations of 2 and 4.

So we are left with two results the Day of Birth number (5) and the Life Path number (11/2).

So in numerology, 34 becomes 3+4. Most two-digit numbers get "broken down"

in the same fashion. The only exceptions are the "master numbers" (11 and 22).

When a master number appears in the final total, it can be read two ways

(11/2 or 22/4). So if a master number appears in your chart, this is something you might wish to jot down and check out later.

Understanding numerology while getting to know the numbers vibrating in your life and how to find them. Putting it simply, in basic Numerology each number represents a single area of our awareness, individual experiences, character and talents. Now what does it mean?

What Do You Want in 2008?

Many people are experiencing feelings of depression and a lack of drive this year.

These negative emotions are directly related to pressures arising from the new direction that their lives are presently taking. You may be one of these individuals who are either at the beginning of a new career avenue, relationship, or an increase in financial responsibilities. Then again, you may simply be trying to decide where you want your life to take you. The going is difficult right now and you will probably believe that you are quite alone on your chosen path. Financial concerns will be the root cause of anxiety for scores of people due to the downturn in the economy and unplanned expenses, but finding a way forward for other reasons will also be a cause for worry. This is how things are at the start of a new cycle and it is natural to suffer the growing pains that accompany such a period.

Imagine a sapling that is trying to grow in a dense forest. It needs sunlight, rain and energy from the soil but larger trees surround it, shade it and take most of the available goodness from the earth. If the sapling is to survive and grow it needs to build its strength slowly, setting down a firm foundation with its roots while reaching for the scarce sunlight and moisture that manages to filter its way through the other trees. This is no easy process for the sapling as there are any number of things that could prevent it from becoming a fully-grown tree and only a few that will help it to blossom. On the surface this appears to be a solitary challenge but behind the scenes in such a way as to be almost invisible, there is an entire eco-system at work.

At this time you are to some extent like the sapling, trying to grow in difficult circumstances. The period that you have entered is a cycle in which to begin again or to make a fresh start. You need to be independent and forward thinking in your approach while remaining aware of your responsibilities to those around you. You are not alone now but you do need to think for yourself and delve inside your mind to discover what you really want to bring about, as only you know what your deep-seated goals are.

There are hidden opportunities around you that you will only notice if you are both sensitive and aware. Set medium to long- range objectives, as this is not a short-term strategy that you are undertaking and avoid impatience both with yourself and others as this attitude will just deplete your energy levels. Begin to build your foundations slowly and put down roots but make them practical rather than imagined. Do not allow yourself the luxury of indecision as this could cause inertia to set in. Believe in yourself and be prepared to express your ideas tactfully to the people that can help you to achieve your aim. They are your 'eco-system' and they will help you if you are clear on what it is that you are searching for. In point of fact, it would not be unusual to meet someone that figures strongly in your future this year but be careful as to whom you choose to confide in as not everyone will be trustworthy. So take the initiative, promote yourself, use your talents and develop the correct skills to suit your situation. Once you are certain of what you want, be determined, decisive and do not take 'no' for an answer. Maintain your poise and stay calm because it is all too easy now to lose emotional control or to attempt to dominate others to your point of view. Any form of personal development, research work or meditation, will be fruitful over the next few months.

You will also need to be almost business-minded, as money will not come easily. Keep an eye on the purse strings and only invest if you have sought good advice and researched the risks. Acting on impulse or being headstrong are both rash attitudes and will have their consequences. You may have to leave old habits, outdated methods and situations that no longer serve a useful purpose behind you. Indulge in a little self-analysis and scrutinise your behaviour from the time that you get up out of bed. Decide which habits and responses have served you well in the past but no longer figure in your future. Firmly but gradually weed them out so that you can replace them with the new, improved you. While you are practicing this exercise try to avoid getting caught up in the moment as you gaze at the past because it is your future that you are ignoring. Fear of the unknown could also hold you back but you should be prepared to think long and hard, and then to take a chance. This is not an easy year by any means and you will need to keep moving forward, have courage and to work hard towards your ideals but remember that fortune favours the brave.

Good luck.

Choose the right path with numerology

Finding out your birth date numerology number, is the first step to finding out where you will go, or what directions you should take in life.

Once you have reduced your birthday to a single number, then you can figure out your life path.

For example: If you reduce your birthday down to the number "1" then here is what that says about you.

ONE. Strong willed, positive, and pure energy. The number one reflects new beginnings, and purity, and when the symbolic meaning of number one is looked at closely, you will see that ONE represents both kinds of action, physical and mental.

This combined with the need for new beginnings, will spur you to take on new projects or go in a new direction and be rewarded for the action.

TWO, if you are two, you are kind, aim for balance in your life, but also the need for planning. You have a need to be with like minded people, and you wish harmony in your relationships. You also have a need to nurture your soul and do what is best for you.

THREE, if you are three, you express yourself creatively. You use your intuition for decisions and to your advantage. Three is also a time identifier, as you look at your past and present to help with your future plans. You need to express yourself, and try new ventures, but wish the cooperation from those around you.

By reducing an important date, such as our birthdays, into one single number, you can then refer to the symbols of that number and gain some knowledge. Birthday numerology is used to reduce your birthdate to a single number by adding the day of the month, the number of the month and all the numbers in the year.

These are just examples of some of the numbers, there are also different paths in numerology you can look at, such as for career, relationships, money, and more. It is fun to work out your number, and follow the symbols.

Numerology is for you

Here is the basic formula for figuring out your Numerology "number". This is considered your Life Path Number.

Add up the digits in your month of birth

Add up the digits in your day of birth

Add up the digits in your year of birth.

Add up the answers.

We keep adding the numbers until we end up with one digit.

Example: July 29, 1958

The month is July, which is the 7th month. 7 is a single digit so there is nothing to add, but if it was 22, it would be 2 + 2 = 4.

Going by our example again, the day is 29. 2 + 9 = 11. 1 + 1 = 2

The year is 1958. 1 + 9 + 5 + 8 = 23. 2 + 3 = 5

The totals then are 7 (from the month) 2 (from the day) 5 (from the year)

7 + 2 + 5 = 14 1 + 4 = 5

Therefore the numerology number for the example would be 5.

If you follow numerology, and the predictions that are made. These are all based on your life "number". But there are many more other calculations, the birth date numerology is just one of them, there are calculations based on your name as well as when you were born. The birth date number is where you start and then you can get readings.

Numerology is an ancient art, and many people follow it closely. Once you have your "number" your life path can be predicted. Many people make their personal life, career choices, relationships, finances and more, based on the results that a Master Numerologist will give you.

Many people believe in the power of math, based on your birth date, where as others follow the stars. Either way, it can be fun to find out your "life path" and look up what your number means for you.
